Android 15 is making some changes under the hood, one of which is the removal of the old PNG-based emoji font file (NotoColorEmojiLegacy.ttf). What this means is that some devices, like the Pixel, will now only use a vector-based file for emojis.
This shift started back with Android 13 when the system emoji renderer moved from using PNG files to vector files. However, the older font file was kept around in Android 13 and 14 to ensure compatibility, allowing apps with their own font renderers to keep using the old style until they could make the switch.
Now, with Android 15, that transition period is over, and the legacy file is being phased out for good, pushing everyone towards the newer, sleeker vector-based emojis.
